Be it a regular dental check up or a specific dental treatment, people always look for the best of the dentists when it comes to taking care of their teeth. There are two reasons for this; the first being that this treatment generally accounts for huge professional fees and the second that, tooth ache is considered to be the worst body pain and people try and avoid it as much as they can. There are certain qualities which all patients look for in a dentist while making a visit.
First and foremost, they expect their dentist to be a good listener, who is willing to patiently listen to their problems and understand what treatment they want from him or her. The dentists must also ensure that their patients feel comfortable and at ease while sitting in the dentist’s chair. It is no hidden fact that most people are terrified of dentists and their treatments, as not only these problems but also these treatments are also considered to be quite painful.

Thus, dentists must put up an attitude which helps ease the nervousness and anxiousness of their patients and makes them feel relaxed. They can do this by engaging their patients in light conversation so as to divert their thoughts from the core issue and then go on with uninterrupted treatment. Conversation also helps at times with patients who wish to know about their dental problem and treatment in detail.

Encouraging Preventive Visits
There is no doubt about the fact that most of the patients visiting dentist are those who are already suffering from some kind of dental problem or pain. One would rarely come across someone who is visiting a dentist for a routine dental check up. In such cases, the dentists need to be even more patient, caring and empathetic towards the patient so as to not only provide them with the necessary dental treatment but also encourage them to pay regular check up visits to keep their teeth healthy and fit.

Continuing Dental Education
By ‘dental education’, we do not mean that one must continue indulging in the dental professional courses and studies. What ‘continuing dental education’ basically means is to maintain a constant link with the prevalent situations and issues in the dental industry. It is always wise to keep oneself informed about the current trends and practices in the field of this treatment so as to provide the best possible treatment to their patients.
The dentists can do so by becoming active members of any recognized dental association or any such organization or even, by mere interaction with co-professionals on a regular basis. Attending seminars and conferences on dental care, treatment and practices whenever possible is another brilliant way of interacting with co-dental professionals and keeping oneself updated about the related happenings.

Social outreach
The dental community, together, must take constant initiatives to spread awareness about care and treatments of teeth to all those who cannot afford the high fees of the dentists. Associations consisting of dentists can take assistance from local business enterprises and local government organizations in making people more aware about the importance of active care and protection of teeth from a dental professional.

There are at least five factors which tend to influence the number of dentist professionals in a given area. When we talk of dentist professionals in this context, we are mainly looking at general dental practitioners as well as specialists, such as cosmetic dentists, orthodontic specialists, periodontic specialists… and so on. When we talk of dentist professionals, our focus is on the professional cadre, rather than the technician cadre of dentistry. It is not really that the technician cadre is not important: it is absolutely important, only that this discussion on dentist professionals is, naturally, more focused on the professional cadre. It also happens that the factors which influence the distribution of dentist professionals are quite different from the factors which influence the distribution of dentistry technicians.
All said and done, the five factors which tend to influence the number of dentist professionals in a given area (say, a given city) would include:

1.	The population of the area in question: naturally, areas with bigger populations will tend to have more dentist professionals (per mile, for instance), than areas with smaller populations. But, of course, if you decide to look at the number of people per dentist professional, these highly populated areas often actually turn out to be the areas with the poorest distribution of dentist professionals. The nature/profile of the people who make up the ‘population’ also has a bearing on the number of dentist professionals to be found in the area, as we will see shortly in the exploration of other factors which influence the number of dentists in a given area.

2.	The financial status of most residents in the area: small areas with financially affluent populations will often tend to have more dentist professionals than much bigger areas whose residents are people of limited means. Some dentistry professionals are pragmatic, and go will normally set up clinics where people are actually in a position to pay for the services rendered there without much trouble.

3.	The presence or absence of dentist training institutions: it is quite a well established fact that many dentists tend to prefer setting up clinics in the cities or towns where they train. Subsequently, the cities which train dentists tend to retain a good number of them. It takes guts to head to an alien place and start a dental clinic there. Most dentists set up clinics in cities where they have some connections: either their home cities or the cities in which they trained.

4.	The general education standards in the area: people with higher standards of education tend to show greater need for (or rather, interest in) regular dental check ups and other non-emergency dental services than people with modest educations. This means that highly erudite areas will tend to have higher numbers of dentist professionals, thanks to the ‘demand pull.’

5.	The presence or absence of major health institutions in the area: areas with many or major hospitals naturally seem to have more dentist professionals than areas with no major health institutions. This is, of course, on account of the fact that major health institutions employ lots of dental professionals in their dentistry departments, and those dentists are normally pulled to live in the localities, so that they can respond to emergencies in a timely manner.

Every time you visit your dentist you expect the best out of him although you know you might be going home with an appointment for another sitting and a heavy fee to pay. And despite all the sittings and endless treatment courses, you are still not able to maintain your dental health. If you are someone who shares the same opinion, it is about time that you change your dentist. Here is how you can learn if the dentist you have preferred is the right one to help you.

1.	The first criterion for knowing whether your dentist is truly helping you is to monitor your dental issues. In other words, the improvement you have made so far can give a fair idea about your dentist’s capabilities. Certainly, this is a very subjective topic as the rate and the chances of healing vary from person to person. Yet if you are personally dissatisfied with your progress, you should seriously consider consulting a new dentist rather than enduring more expensive sessions and painful treatments.

2. If you are suffering from recurrent tooth ache, your dentist should be able to come out with a definitive and conclusive treatment within a couple of week. It could be tooth extraction or root canal but if you are facing recurrent troubles and several sittings, certainly your dentist is not helping you much. The time taken reduces the chances of your recovery and deteriorates your oral hygiene because you might not be able continue your routine dental procedures when faced with a non-healing dental condition.

3.	A dentist who cannot educate you about dental care can never help you in any way. The most common problem associated with dental care procedures is that the patients are not aware of the aftercare requirements. No proper instructions are given to the patient and this leads to more troubles in future. Thus the patient returns again to the same dentist for relief. Certainly, for the dentist it means more income and more profits but that is not exactly what we expect from the dental community.

4.	No dental treatment can be successful without the cooperation and caution rendered by the patient. This calls for ample interaction between the dentist and the patient. If you feel that your dentist is not discussing the disease and treatment methods with you, it means he is more interested in charging a hefty fee than patient satisfaction. Every patient is apprehensive and worried about their dental issues and it is the duty of a good dentist to offer all the professional and personal support he can to improve the situation. So don’t let your dentist keep you in the dark for too long.

5.	Lastly, your dentist should help you in saving on your dental bills. Especially, if you are about to undergo an expensive treatment procedure or dental surgery, your dentist should inform you about the nature and types of dental insurance available in the market. You should definitely investigate about different medical options before vouching in for any kind of treatment.
